WENDY'S STORY...

A graduate of the Amos Tuck School of Business, Wendy is now working as Marketing Manager for Brewster & Shuster Associates, an long-established Providence firm.  She oversees the marketing of group benefits and wholistic fnancial planning.  Her passion is a combination of strategic planning, creative marketing, and health & wellness.

Over the past ten years, Wendy's extended family has been challenged by a series of events: two fatal accidents, two disabling accidents, mental illness, and terminal illness, and she is well aware of the financial stresses these situations pose to a family.  Health care and family support have emerged at the forefront of her life.

Wendy's greatest concerns are with the challenges posed by health care cost management.  There is a growing need to improve preventive care and education with regards to both physical and financial health.  She is fond of quoting Emerson: "Health is the first wealth."

Amid the stress of her own family life, she has maintained her own health by walking 40 minutes every day to help maintain a healthy biometrics profile:

-  blood pressure - 118/80
-  normal cholesterol level - 186
-  high HDL (good) cholesterol level - 81
-  normal glucose level - 82
-  BMI - 26

Managing her personal finances has proved much more challenging in the face of everything else, but Wendy has coninued to develop a wealth of research, marketing and sales management experience.  Over the years, she has worked for an interesting range of companies, including Masachusetts Financial Services, Continental Can Company, H. George Caspari, and AFLAC.

Over the past year, Wendy has been researching a number of important health assurance topics.  This has led to the creation of the AWAKEN program and the educational website Wake Up People - http://www.wakeuppeople.org/.  Wendy has also launched Rhode Island Netwalking, which combines her interests in walking and networking.

Wendy facilitates a 40-minute walk outside.  The walk begins with five minutes of warm-ups and ends with five minutes of yoga stretching.

Walks can incorporate posture awareness, footstep sensitivity, interval training, and breathing exercises to maximize the benefits of the workout.

Wendy's favorite part of walking is the dynamic personal interaction that takes place.  Outside the prescribed box of the workplace, people tend to talk more openly, share concerns, and engage in creative brainstorming.  Through guided and purposeful activity, Wendy draws upon her business management background to help the group to clarify goals and to establish plans and ideas that can help to move the business forward.

Wendy comments, "Participants can't believe how fast the time flies and how far they have walked when they are busy talking.  They find it's a good feeling."
